Faculty volunteer visit

An afternoon spent reading and sounding out words together.

With classmates, I visited a local children's home in Malaysia. Rather than running one formal class, we sat among the children, read with them, and practised recognising words together.

When a child came across an unfamiliar word, we slowed down and sounded it out together. Between reading and activities, we also sat with them, talked, and shared a little of the afternoon.

It was not a large programme with a complicated agenda. We simply gave the children time, attention, and a few more pages to read together.
